Nurturing Discovery and Creation

What does “Applied Learning in the Arts and Engineering” look like? We use an active, hands-on approach called Project-Based Learning (PBL). Each cross-disciplinary project connects the grade-level curriculum to real-world challenges and invites students to become active directors of their learning. Students conduct their own research and apply what they have learned in a final project that they design and create. Along the way, they learn engineering, design, and art skills. In addition, you will find:

  • A strong focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) and character development.

Welcome to PS 198K: The Magnet School of Applied Learning in the Arts and Engineering. We are a PreK – 5 magnet school located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. With our unique magnet theme and hands-on approach to learning, we are nurturing active learners and critical thinkers who are ready for the challenges of the 21st Century.

We strive to get to know each student and honor their individual needs and differences, so they never feel like they are just a number. When you and your child join our school community, you become family!

What is a Magnet School?

We are a magnet school within the New York City DOE. As a magnet school, we are a public school, but we are open to any student within the five boroughs of New York City, not just students in our zone. Our magnet school grant provides additional funding to support special programs, facilities, and partnerships around our magnet theme.

Our Day

Breakfast begins at 7:45 am.

The school day begins at 8:15 am Don't be late! 

3K and Pre-K- -The day ends at 2:25 pm. They will be dismissed by the school yard gate on Albany Avenue.

Kindergarten and 1st grade - The day ends at 2:30 pm. They will be dismissed by the school yard gate on Albany Ave. On inclement weather days, they will be dismissed by the auditorium ramp on East 42nd street.

Grade 2 - The day ends at 2:35 pm. They will be dismissed by the school yard gate on Albany Ave. On inclement weather days, they will be dismissed by the main entrance of the school building .

Grades 3-5 - The days ends at 2:35 pm. They will be dismissed by the school yard gate on East 42nd street. On inclement weather days, they will be dismissed by the main entrance of the school building .

Please be patient. We want everyone dismissed safely. 

Our Curriculum

We provide a rigorous academic curriculum to prepare students for future success in college and the workforce. Our curriculum is aligned to the Next Generation Learning Standards and meets all New York State and NYC DOE educational standards. For 5th graders, we have a departmentalized schedule where students switch classes for math and English language arts to prepare them for middle school. At all grades, we use ongoing progress monitoring and formative assessment to tailor instruction and identify students in need of additional support. Our core programs include:

  • English Language Arts/Literacy:  HMH Into Reading
  • Math: enVision Math, Algebra for All
  • Science: Amplify Science and hands-on science lab activities
  • Social Studies: NYCDOE’s Passport to Social Studies
  • Art and Music: One day of each per week, taught by our full-time art and music teachers
  • Physical Education: 2 days per week of phys ed and/or movement & dance
  • Technology: Coding, robotics and computer skills (varies by grade)

    • Fountas and Pinnell Literacy Assessment 
    • Daily classroom formative assessment 

Our Mission

Our mission is to establish a community of lifelong learners through a collaborative effort of teachers, students, administrators, and parents. Instruction and student achievement will be driven by the highest standards and expectations as reflected in the performance of all students

Our Values

Our values are embedded in our school credo: Be RESPECTFUL. Be KIND. Be COOPERATIVE. These values are modeled by our staff and reinforced in our character education programs, in our daily morning meetings, and in our approach to behavioral support. We are proud to have a community of learners who demonstrate these values every day.

Academic Support

We offer a full range of Special Education (SPED) services for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). We also provide academic support for any student struggling to master grade-level standards. Your child’s teachers will work with you to identify your child’s needs and make sure they are getting the help they need to be successful. Our support services include: 

  • Individualized small-group instruction and intervention based on student needs for 40 minutes each morning (all students)
  • SPED services including speech and language, occupational and physical therapy, and adaptive phys ed 
  • SETSS (Special Education Teacher Support Services) for push-in and pull-out support for students with IEPs
  • Additional intervention services for students needing help with grade-level math and literacy skills
  • After-school tutoring in math and English language arts
  • In-house school psychologist and guidance counselor
  • Targetted teacher-led after-school intervention 

Getting Here

We are located in the East Flatbush neighborhood in Brooklyn. The building entrance is on E. 42nd between Foster Ave. and Farragut Road. We are easily accessible via the 2 and 5 trains to Flatbush Junction and the B6 bus to Glenwood Rd./Albany Ave. 

As a Magnet School we have many new programs to enhance our academic curriculum. We currently serve students in grades 3K to Fifth Grade. PS198 is a unique school located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn. Our goal is to provide our students with a nurturing and secure environment that is conducive to all students' intellectual, emotional, and social development.
